Happy Birthday Uncle Rance

My earliest memories of singing took place standing right beside you as you played the organ. I had never experienced nervousness about singing until you became the Pastor of New Bethel. You took your rightful place in the pulpit area. I began to sing a good distance away from you, as someone else played the organ. As time went on, I was pleasantly impressed with your innate ability to be my Pastor when I needed my Pastor yet naturally knew when I just needed my Uncle Rance.

One of the greatest tunes on Earth is your rendition of, “That Will Be Good Enough for Me”. You sing, “I’ve never been to Paris, in the Spring or the Fall, I’ve never been to India to see the Taj Mahal…” yet I marvel at how a little boy from Monroe, MI. made it from humble beginnings on Almyra Ave. to singing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. (The White House) for the President of the United States.

One day as I sat talking with Grandma Ma, she told me she had one request of the Lord. She asked the Lord to not allow any of her children to “go” before her because she knew she couldn’t handle that. Seeing as how she had twelve children, this was no small plea. Yet, the Lord was faithful and honored her request.

You gave advice in a sermon many years ago. My Mom has never forgotten it and shares it often with others today. “Nothing beats a failure, like a try.” We’re trying. Keeping it real? You left here so swiftly… my heart is forever shattered. Without you (all you’ve instilled in me), I could not be (the woman I am today). Yet, I will continue to try not to grieve as those who have no hope (ref. I Thessalonians 4:13). I will seek comfort in the knowledge that if I live a life that is pleasing in the sight of God (Philippians 1), I will see you again. I’ve seen so many people express how you may now take your rest. I assume that means from the labor and troubles of this world.

Papa and Sis had you going at the age of 5. I know they’re showing you all around Heaven now! You’ve traveled the globe for over 65 years pouring into the hearts of others and never quit. Why stop now? Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say,  Rejoice!

The lyrics you penned for me hit differently now. “Here I Am. I’ll do your will. Forget about mine. No matter how I feel…” During one of our many pulpit talks, we laughed about receiving some of the strangest “compliments” as singers. I told you about the sentiments I received after singing, “Here I Am” for a Pastor’s anniversary service. Today I extend the same compliment to you. You started that song (of life) like a lamb, but you finished it, like a LION!

May this be your most amazing birthday ever.
